Michigan Football: 5 Thoughts on past week in Wolverines recruiting
Does corner board need to expand too?
I have talked about this over and over again, but Michigan football still has just one cornerback committed in the 2021 recruiting class and that simply won’t be the case when it’s all said and done. That’s just not enough at that position.
Three-star corner Ja’Den McBurrows still seems solid and he’s a good get. I actually think he will play better than his ranking and like his fit overall.
But getting a second corner has been a challenge. One name that’s getting a lot of buzz right now is Florida State commit Omarion Cooper.
Cooper is a four-star corner ranked in the top 300. He committed to Florida State this summer, but the Seminoles have been struggling and his contact with the Wolverines has been consistent. Here’s what Sam Webb said on the Michigan Insider Podcast this week about Cooper:
"“Yeah, (there’s) just consistent contact. And my understanding is it’s not just Michigan reaching out to him… it’s that he initiates a lot of the contact as well. That the kid is actively assisting in the nurturing and continuation of the contact, that is absolutely huge.”"
The interest seems to be mutual and of all the cornerback targets on the board now, Cooper might be the most legitimate. I still have hope for Ceyair Wright, who talked recently about talking a self-guided visit and honestly, with the numbers the way they are, U-M could take both.
Realistically though, one would be ideal and if Michigan can’t land either, then this is another place where the board needs to expand as it did recently with an offer to Kamari Lassiter.
That will be something to keep an eye on — now looking ahead to corners in 2022.
