Michigan football will start practicing in pads soon and looking ahead to fall camp, here are four position battles to watch for the Wolverines.

As fall camp approaches for Michigan football this week, well fall camp meaning the start of padded practices, there are still some key position battles to be decided.

However, there is one position battle we won’t have to pay close attention to during camp and that’s at quarterback, where Joe Milton will be the starter, even if Jim Harbaugh hasn’t said so officially at this point.

Quarterback will still be an important position to monitor. Milton has obviously taken some big steps forward, but becoming an elite quarterback is a process and it takes time.

Cade McNamara will also have an important role to play this season. Hopefully, he doesn’t see the field at all, except for garbage time, however, with Dylan McCaffrey seeking a transfer, McNamara will be the backup, so this camp will be important for him too.

As far as the actual spots up for grabs, it seems there is more availability on the offensive side of the ball, then on defense, although their is playing time available all over.

But on defense, up front, Aidan Hutchinson, Kwity Paye, Carlo Kemp and Chris Hinton are clear starters. Cam McGrone and Josh Ross at linebacker, as well as Daxton Hill, Vincent Gray and Brad Hawkins in the secondary are in the same boat.

That’s basically nine starting players right there. Ross started a year ago until he was injured. The viper job is open but Michael Barrett seems like the favorite there, leaving corner as possibly the only starting spot still undecided on defense.

Yet, we will begin our look at position battles on offense, starting with what could be the most fascinating battle of camp — running back.
