Michigan Football: A possible timeline change for priority target
One of Michigan football’s top recruiting priorities in the 2021 class was supposed to decide this week. But now, he might not.
There was hope among Michigan football fans that there would be a commitment this week in favor of the Wolverines and their 2021 recruiting class.
That’s because George Rooks, a four-star defensive lineman and a long-time priority target for the Wolverines was supposed to announce his decision this week.
However, according to a new report from EJ Holland of Rivals Monday night ($), Rooks isn’t likely to make a decision this week. Here’s what he wrote:
"“It looks like George Rooks might be even more like Drew Kendall than I originally thought. After pushing back his August decision timeline to the end of September, it now looks unlikely that will (Rooks) will make a commitment before the end of the week. Is it still possible? Of course… this is another weird recruitment.”"
It’s really not that surprising if you have followed Rooks and his recruitment. He was given some crystal ball projections and other experts picks to Michigan around May. But since then, it’s been pretty quiet.
Rooks took self-guided visits to Michigan, Penn State and other places. He is also considering Boston College and Pittsburgh, yet the New Jersey prospect seems destined for the Wolverines or Penn State.
It’s hard to decipher what this means for his decision, but according to Holland ($), if Rooks doesn’t decide this week, it could be pushed back until December.
"“So when will Rooks make a decision? If he opts not to do it this week, then a commitment may not come until closer to the early signing period in December. While he’s pushed things back a few times, Rooks has been adamant about not making a decision during the season.”"
While Michigan football would appear to have an advantage, with numerous Futurecast and crystal ball projections, this really feels like a 50/50 recruitment right now and that could be why Rooks is having a hard time making a decision.
The Wolverines will likely be in this one until the end and the top-200 defensive lineman would fill a huge need. Michigan currently has zero defensive tackle types committed in 2021.
With 20 recruits committed and around 25-26 spots available, the Wolverines could expand the board if they wish and if Rooks and others aren’t deciding until late, they may need to do just that.
