Michigan Football: Can Wolverines flip a Florida State commit?
Michigan football has been targeting a Florida State commitment and the Seminoles struggle to start the season certainly has to be helping.
Recruiting is a cutthroat business and it’s one where things change frequently and for Michigan football, there could be an opportunity to add to the 2021 class due to some struggles elsewhere.
It’s been no secret that Michigan football has continued to pursue 2021 four-star cornerback Omarion Cooper, even though he committed to Florida State over the summer.
Cooper is listed at 6-foot, 170 pounds and he’s ranked as the No. 278th overall player in the 2021 class. He committed to Florida State in June over Michigan and a slew of other programs.
The Wolverines who have just one cornerback committed in 2021, Ja’Den McBurrows, have been looking to add another and with the Florida State’s struggles, Cooper is one possible option.
Where does Michigan football stand with Cooper?
Steve Lorenz of the Michigan Insider ($) spoke to Cooper on Sunday and the cornerback from Florida said he’s hearing from the Wolverines a lot. “I am talking to Michigan almost every day right now. It’s mostly been from Coach Brown and Coach Zordich.”
The fact that Florida State is now 0-2 and was beaten 52-10 Saturday night by Miami has made not just Michigan but other programs reach out to Cooper too ($), as the sharks smell blood in the water. Here’s an eye-catching quote from the 4-star recruit:
“I’m weighing my options,” Cooper told Andrew Irvin of 247Sports over the weekend. “I’m committed to Florida State, but I’m open still. I’m just letting it play out.”
Irvin also reports that Cooper has heard from Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisville and Penn State over the past few months. But the Wolverines have been making the hardest push. Here’s more of what Cooper said about U-M:
"“They are just saying that I could be an impact player. I was hoping to get there [for a visit], but with the dead period, I can’t. It’s ‘The Big House. Who wouldn’t feel like playing there?”"
The Michigan coaching staff would certainy like to see Cooper playing in the Big House and at this point, along with Ceyair Wright, he’s the best hope of Michigan landing a four-star corner.
It’s always hard to tell how results on the field will impact a recruitment. Cooper at least seems open to hearing from other schools and if U-M can get him on campus, a flip is possible.
