Jalen Mayfield is set to return to Michigan football and Saturday he tweeted something that makes it seem good news is on the way.

Trying to interpret things from social media can be a dangerous game. But Michigan football player Jalen Mayfield piqued some curiosity Saturday night with a tweet.

Recently, Mayfield said he was going to return to the Wolverines after declaring for the draft and last night, he tweeted “Uh oh” with the purple devil emoji.

That emoji is usually the sign of something good. For instance, Michigan recruiting reporter EJ Holland tweeted a purple devil when he learned of Tyler Martin’s commitment to U-M.

Of course, people started to speculate on what Mayfield could have meant. It’s possible he was referring to his status for the upcoming season and getting clearance to play.

But I don’t know if that was ever really in question. It’s not like Mayfield is the only player in the country returning, so I don’t know if that would be worth the tweet. Plus why not just say that?

Brandon Brown, who covers the Wolverines for Wolverine Digest, asked Mayfield in a tweet if he was cleared, then tweeted this below, which can also be interpreted as good news.

Now, what the hell does all of this mean? In all honestly, no one really knows, but the only other news that would be worth celebrating right now is the return of Nico Collins or Ambry Thomas?

There was word that a return by Mayfield would make it more likely that Collins would return and it sounds like he has been in contact with other Michigan football players.

Even when Josh Gattis addressed the media this week, it didn’t sound like things were a done deal with Nico. But there has been no reporting to match that, so it’s pure speculation.

At this point, it really doesn’t seem likely that Thomas will return. Remember, he had health issues in 2019 and that could be playing a factor. It sounds like like’s preparing for the NFL draft.

If Collins decides to stay on that same course, then good luck to both of them. Certainly, Michigan football would be better with Nico Collins, who could play his way into the first round of the draft and Thomas, who is U-M’s best corner and also has early-round potential.

But the show must go on. As far as Mayfield, maybe it means something about Collins. If so, that will be great. But even if it just means Mayfield is cleared, then that’s a good thing too.
