Michigan football offered a new quarterback in the class of 2022 and it’s a significant offer that you could see coming.

Michigan football has its sights set on a few different quarterbacks in the class of 2022, but on Friday, a new offer went out and it was to Gavin Wimsatt.

Wimsatt is a four-star, dual-threat quarterback who is ranked in the 247 specific rankings as the No. 2 at that position in the 2022 class, as well as 37th overall.

Michigan football has been in communication with Wimsatt and reached out to him on Sept. 1. Now, according to 247 sports, the Wolverines have finally offered the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder

“It’s pretty big, it means a lot,” Wimsatt said to 247 sports about the offer. And here’s what he said about head coach Jim Harbaugh:

"“He’s a nice guy and fun to talk to. He just told me that he liked me a lot, he watched my film and he thinks I’m a guy that can really compete.”"

Wimsatt is out of Kentucky and in the 247 sports composite rankings, he is ranked 80th overall, as well as the fourth-rated dual-threat QB. Kentucky is in the mix already along with others such as Michigan State, Notre Dame, Nebraska, TCU and Missouri.

At this point, Wimsatt only has a few SEC offers but that’s likely to change. He compares favorably to some of Michigan’s other top targets at the position such as MJ Morris and Maleek Murphy.

From the naked eye, Murphy looks to be the better passer but as far as dual-threat quarterbacks go,  Wimsatt looks as good as any in 2022, and landing him would give U-M another elite arm.

Since Michigan football is going to sign J.J. McCarthy, a five-star quarterback in 2021, that can make it difficult to back it up with the commitment of another highly-ranked QB.

When the Wolverines reached out Sept. 1, it seemed like an offer was inevitable. I don’t know what it says about other targets like Morris, but he was always going to be a tough get out of Georgia and Murphy’s recruitment will also be a tough battle win.

Wimsatt won’t be easy either. His offer list doesn’t really reflect his talent or his ranking and plenty of big-time programs reached out to him so more offers are likely coming.

Yet, as I said the other day, this feels like a winnable recruitment, so I’m glad to see the Wolverines jump in with an offer. To be honest, I don’t know what took so long.
