It’s only a matter of time before Michigan football extends an offer to elite dual-threat quarterback Gavin Wimsatt in 2022.

Tuesday morning at 12:01 was the first time Michigan football and other programs were allowed to officially contact 2022 recruits.

Obviously, Michigan and other programs have been in contact with 2022 prospects, but generally, that’s after passing a number along through a coach and the kids makes the contact.

On Sept. 1, that all changes as schools can initiate contact and Michigan football reached out to some elite recruits and one of them was four-star quarterback Gavin Wimsatt.

Wimsatt is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2022 class. He ranks 80th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings, as well as the No. 4 dual-threat QB. But in 247 sports own rankings, he’s the No. 37 player overall and the No. 2 dual-threat signal caller.

No matter how you look at it, Wimsatt is a dynamic kid who can do it all at quarterback. He’s 6-foot-3, 200 pounds and he took to Twitter this morning, saying Michigan was showing him “love.”

Of course, Michigan football was one of nearly 20 programs to reach out to Wimsatt this morning, according to what he posted on Twitter.

One difference is that, with Michigan at least, Wimsatt is still waiting for his offer. Michigan State offered recently, while he also has offers from Notre Dame, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, his in-state school and a bunch of others.

Wimsatt told Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider ($) that he heard from Jim Harbaugh and Matt Dudek early Tuesday morning. Here’s more of what he said:

"“I heard from Coach Harbaugh this morning and Coach Dudek last night. They just told me that they thought I’d be great for the program and could do some great things.”"

Michigan has some other QB offers to MJ Morris and Maalik Murphy, but a top target hasn’t really emerged yet and Wimsatt could be that guy. Right now, it feels like a winnable recruitment if the Wolverines would offer, which I think they will soon.

Michigan football also contacts elite tight end

Another 2022 recruit who has had interest in Michigan and who already has an offer is tight end Jaleel Skinner.

If you aren’t familiar with Skinner, he’s a top-100 recruit out of South Carolina, ranking 99th in the 247 composite rankings and third among tight ends. In the specific 247 rankings, he’s actually listed as the top tight end for 2022 at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds.

The relationship has been building nicely so far and the Wolverines were one of the first to reach out Tuesday morning. Now, Skinner has a call scheduled with Jim Harbaugh today at 3:30 according to The Michigan Insider ($).

While the Wolverines haven’t landed tons of South Carolina prospects, Steve Lorenz noted ($) that Skinner has initiated much of the contact and he believes U-M is right there at the top of the list.

Michigan contacts another Kentucky recruit

The Wolverines also reached out to another prospect from Kentucky on Tuesday morning and that’s three-star defensive back Treyveon Longmire.

Longmire is listed as a 6-foot-2, 170-pound athlete but since Lorenz is reporting that safeties coach Bob Shoop made contact Tuesday, it’s safe to say the Wolverines want him as a DB.

Kentucky currently has the lead with one crystal ball projection, but Nebraska and Florida State are other contenders. Longmire also had this to say about the offer from Michigan last month:

"“I’m very interested. They are one of the best programs in the country. I like that are very competitive and highly ranked year in and out. They are tradition rich and that’s a big plus. Their coaching staff is very good too.”"

Michigan doesn’t really have a history of landing recruits in Kentucky or South Carolina, but U-M seems solidly in the mix with all three of these recruits, at least, I think the Wolverines will be once they offer Wimsatt.

Next. 5 Recruits Michigan will land in 2021. dark

If they choose to prioritize him, they could have a real chance of landing elite quarterbacks in back-to-back cycles, something that isn’t all that easy to do.
