No. 6 Michigan ties No. 3 Notre Dame in 1992

The 1992 season was a successful one for Michigan football, as the Wolverines won the Big Ten championship and also the Rose Bowl, finishing the year ranked No. 5 by the Associated Press.

The Wolverines actually went unbeaten in 1992, but failed to win or contend for a national championship thanks to three ties, the first of which came in the season opener at Notre Dame.

Both teams were strong that year and ended up losing just one game between them. Notre Dame ended the year as the No. 4 team following four straight wins over ranked teams including a Cotton Bowl victory over Texas A&M.

In that first week though, Michigan had the Irish dead to rights, leading by 10 points, in the fourth quarter at South Bend. Elvis Grbac threw three interceptions in the tie, including one deep in Notre Dame territory with just over a minute left.

Lou Holtz was then criticized for playing for the tie. Looking back, the tie was costly for both teams, but Michigan also tied Illinois and Ohio State on its way to a 9-0-3 season.
