Michigan football won’t open its 2020 season this week, as it was supposed to, but here’s a look at some memorable season-opening wins from the past.

The fact that there will be college football played in stadiums Saturday is both exciting and painful. As a Michigan football fan, it’s especially conflicting.

It will be good to see from FBS programs get underway as the American and some other leagues open play. But it will also make you think of could have been and what might be.

There were rumors and hope of a vote by the Big Ten to resume its fall season by Oct. 10. There was hope a vote could happen Friday, but that didn’t happen and it doesn’t sound like a season is going to happen before November at the earliest.

That would be better than January or farther back in the spring. But it still wouldn’t allow for the Big Ten to be in the College Football Playoff. The best hope now is for the Big Ten and Pac-12 to play concurrent seasons, with their champions meeting in the Rose Bowl.

As an old-school fan, I’d love that. Just make the 2020-21 season or whatever, the run for the roses. As long as we get to see some Michigan football at some point, I don’t care.

Just having a chance to compete for a Big Ten championship would be enough for me. That should always be goal No. 1 anyways — that and beat Ohio State.

But since we know Michigan won’t play Saturday and to be honest, we have no clue when the Wolverines will play, this is the first of a series of classic games we will re-live each Saturday.

Some weeks it might be five or however many classic games against a said opponent. This week, since it would be the opening game, here’s a look back at five memorable season openers for Michigan football through the years.
