Michigan Football: Remembering 3 August classics for Wolverines
By Nick Popio
August 30, 2008, vs. Utah
A new era dawned on that day in which hadn’t been seen for previous years before. New head coach Rich Rodriguez debuted with his popular high up-tempo offense after taking over the reins for the retired Lloyd Carr. There were many in the seats and watching from home eager to see what the out of the ordinary regime would bring to Ann Arbor.
It felt like a surreal moment just watching the offense lineup in position on the initial drive. The atmosphere was sort of a culture shock for many around the globe on that summer afternoon. Unfortunately, the hope for a fresh beginning, post-Carr, didn’t last much too long afterward.
The Wolverines lead the way following a quarter of play. They didn’t gain any points until the fourth where they made things interesting again. Nick Sheridan got the nod as starting quarterback and wasn’t really effective throughout. Steven Threet rallied the troops and ultimately earned the gig as a starter.
Down by 15, the comeback got initiated quickly. Threet forged the maize and blue to within a deuce, but couldn’t get any closer. The clock struck midnight on the outing and the forgetful 2008 season had only just begun.
