Michigan Basketball: Brandon Weston doesn’t believe predictions, UM still in play
Michigan basketball has missed out on its fair share of top talent and Brandon Weston might be the next one spurn the Wolverines, or not.
We thought it was over. The experts at the major recruiting sites laid out their predictions for four-star Brandon Weston and they’re unanimous: Seton Hall would be getting the 63rd best basketball player for 2021 class. On September 1st, the day Weston said he will be committing, Michigan basketball is supposed to lose out on another top recruit.
Crystal balls and FutureCasts have been flying off the shelf in favor of the Pirates and away from the Wolverines.
It makes sense Brandon wouldn’t be headed to Ann Arbor. Weston is a wing or guard and there are already two guys committed to Michigan to fill that role.
With only one scholarship available, Juwan must get a plug-and-play center to backup Hunter Dickinson. He can’t afford to go after whoever he wants to because Dickinson is going to be the only true five on the roster in 2021.
That’s the narrow-minded view. I have been part of the narrow-minded group. Think of it as google maps. I’ve (we’ve) been down on street view when I really need to zoom out to understand how all of this works.
Sure, the staff has one scholarship to play with…right now. There’s always attrition. In the offseason, there could be one or two transfers. There could also be someone committed today that winds up elsewhere. Juwan isn’t in street view and I bet Weston isn’t either.
As quickly as the prediction came, so did a response from the 11th best SF for the 2021 cycle.

“What Crystal ball? Well you must be good cuz Me & My Family are still undecided,” Weston tweeted.
This is a perfect situation to bring out one of the best movie lines in history: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance,” Jim Carrey said as Llyod Christmas in Dumb and Dumber.
Yes Michigan nation, there’s a chance, albeit a very small one.
Matt’s musings
Juwan Howard is a legend in Chicago. The Illini don’t even carry as much weight as the Michigan basketball head coach in Chi-town. His playing days are long gone, but the name recognition remains and it’s already paid off with Isaiah Barnes, and it’s going to pay off even more in the future.
Still, it’s unlikely Brandon Weston picks the Wolverines over the other contenders, but not totally out of the realm of possibility. As mentioned, there are two guys who fill similar positions as Weston, however, Weston is ranked higher than them and would be Michigan’s second-highest recruit for the class.
Yes, there are scholarship limits. But we must remember the last time Michigan writers were spending hours constructing articles around the scholarships that were at one time above the NCAA limit.
I was one of them.
While we were doing that, Juwan was probably sipping on a mai tai and laughing at us.
Street view versus world view.
