Michigan Football: Latest in the Drew Kendall recruiting saga
Here’s the latest on Drew Kendall as Michigan football ramps up its effort to land a commitment from the four-star recruit.
With Michigan football recruit Drew Kendall, it’s fair to ask, is he ever going to commit?
Since he started trending with expert predictions back in April to Michigan, Kendall has continually moved back his decision date.
It was July and then August and it’s been moved back again according to the most recent report from EJ Holland of Rivals ($):
"“Kendall is still weighing his options, but he did say that he plans to talk about things with his family and coaches soon. Kendall has said this to me before. Now, it appears his timeline is before mid-September.”"
Holland also had an interesting note that despite Kendall applying to Stanford, the Cardinal isn’t a real player due to the distance. That means this is down to Michigan football and Boston College.
"“Kendall did apply to Stanford, but I’m told distance is too big of a factor and that Kendall himself doesn’t envision himself going out West.”"
So if it’s still down to Michigan and Boston College, which is has been for months, why hasn’t a decision been made? Especially after Rocco Spindler went to Notre Dame?
Kendall still has concerns about Michigan
In another update regarding Kendall Monday, Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider also offered some insight on this recruitment.
According to Webb ($), Kendall was worried about how he would fit with the offensive line and the scheme. That’s why Josh Gattis was involved in the latest contact.
It sounds like Gattis and Ed Warriner were able to temper those concerns with Kendall. But now, there is a new concern about roster size having to do with the NCAA’s decision to grant players an extra year of eligibility. Here’s what Webb wrote ($):
"“The Kendalls reportedly wondered how the Wolverines plan to handle the additional year of eligibility granted to all players due to COVID? In other words, will there be more guys coming back than previously expected?”"
So first Kendall was worried about committing as part of a four-man interior offensive line class and now he’s concerned about the numbers left over.
You get the feeling like Kendall is just inventing excuses now.
There’s no question that Boston College has been negatively recruiting U-M here and trying to sell Kendall on being a star at BC, instead of just a guy at Michigan.
I’ve never understood that selling point. But with Kendall, it seems to be working on some level. Outside of that and his dad’s connections to Boston College, it just doesn’t make sense.
Looking back, I said before if he didn’t commit in July, he probably wouldn’t, then repeated the same line about August…so now, is it mid-September or bust for the Wolverines?
Who knows, but Kendall’s recruitment continues to feel up in the air and it will be hard to have any confidence until he makes an official announcement.
