Michigan Football: More 2022 crystal balls, latest on Donovan Edwards
Michigan football adds more expert projections for elite recruits in the class of 2022. Plus more on top 2021 target Donovan Edwards.
While many Michigan football fans are probably focused on when Drew Kendall might commit or possibly even Donovan Edwards, the Wolverines continue to trend for a pair of elite wide receiver recruits in the 2022 class.
Those guys are four-star Tyler Morris and fellow four-star Kaleb Brown. Both recruits had multiple crystal ball picks projecting them to Michigan football prior to the weekend, but each picked up a new one Saturday from Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider.
Marich joins ($) Steve Wiltfong, Steve Lorenz and Tom Loy who each had placed picks for Morris to Michigan, all with a confidence level of seven on a scale of 1-10.
Morris, who is out of Illinois and played with Michigan football commit J.J. McCarthy, is ranked 79th overall in the 247 composite rankings and 12th at wide receiver. He’s 6-foot, 175 pounds.
Here’s what Morris told Marich about offensive coordinator Josh Gattis:
"“I have talked with (Coach) Gattis and a lot of times… what I like is it’s not always just about football and sometimes getting to know me, learning about my family and stuff like that,” he said. “In terms of football, we’ve just been talking about how they would use me and the amount of speed in space. It’s something I could fit into.”"
Four-star athlete, Kaleb Brown, is a 5-foot-11 wide receiver who ranks 38th overall in the 2022 class and sixth among wide receivers. While Morris is more out an outside guy, he does more damage in the slot and Marich added a third crystal ball ($) for him to the Wolverines.
Brown was also teammates with McCarthy on a 7-on-7 team, so there is a connection there. He’s also from Chicago and Michigan football has been killing it in Illinois.
So while we wait for the next 2021 recruit to commit, we should remember to keep an eye on some of these 2022 targets.
What about Donovan Edwards and no Big Ten season?
EJ Holland of Rivals caught up with Donovan Edwards again Saturday and while his update didn’t provide much new information, he did ask Donovan about how the Big Ten not having a season could impact his recruitment.
And thankfully for Michigan football fans, Holland reported Edwards ($) said it won’t. He’s what the recruiting expert wrote:
"“Edwards added that the Big Ten’s decision will not affect his decision either. He had a good talk with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh about it earlier this week and feels comfortable with everything.”"
That’s a positive development for Michigan, but Jim Harbaugh and company also deserve credit for reaching out to recruits quickly and having a response. It seems to have worked and not just with Edwards.
The four-star running back and No. 2 player in the state of Michigan, told Holland he would like to visit Oklahoma and Georgia along with Michigan again. Those three schools appear to be it.
So, it should come as good news that the Sooners are trending with Camar Wheaton, the No. 2 running back in the 2021 class, one of two backs ranking higher than Edwards in the 247 composite rankings.
It seems unlikely Edwards would want to join him and that has the staff feeling even better about their chances of keeping Donovan in the state of Michigan.
Now, if the dead period keeps getting extended, it should only hasten a decision from Edwards and if he decides before taking any official visits, you’d have to think the Wolverines would be it.
