Two seasons in one year won’t work

It’s easy to say that there is going to be a spring season while ignoring many of the logistical issues. Putting those aside for a moment, the biggest issue is player safety.

Yes, not playing a season in the fall is being done in the name of player safety and to protect against the spread of COVID-19. But that won’t suddenly make playing two seasons in the same calendar year a good idea.

Basketball and baseball and those sports which have less contact probably have more flexibility. As Urban Meyer pointed out, in football, it’s a lot of snaps for a young man to play:

"“The body, in my very strong opinion, is not made to play two seasons within a calendar year. That’s 2,000 repetitive reps and football’s a physical, tough sport. So … I don’t — really don’t — see that happening.”"

A former Michigan offensive lineman agreed and here’s what Doug Skene told Rivals:

"“That’s not happening. There’s a recovery period, a strength and conditioning developmental period,” former Michigan offensive lineman Doug Skene said. “There’s a maturity period, a social period, academic advancement … they’re not going to cram in two football seasons in one year. That is not happening. No way.”"

Both of those guys know football and Jim Harbaugh does too. I also think that’s why he was advocating so hard for a fall season.
