Brandon Johns Jr

There aren’t many like him.

Brandon Johns Jr. dominated the court in East Lansing, and despite the hometown interest, he chose the Wolverines. The runner up for Mr. Basketball graded out at 70th overall for his class and the 16th best PF.

As a freshman, the 6-foot-8 big man competed with the big boys at center. It didn’t go well as he was a prototypical four, at the time. As a sophomore, he had spurts where he looked ready for extra minutes, and then other times, he fell off the map.

Had Isaiah Livers stayed eligible for the NBA draft, Juwan would have looked at Johns to fill the role. Even with Livers back, Johns and Isaiah have entirely different play styles. Isaiah has a much better perimeter shot, but Brandon is no slouch from three. He’s accurate enough to draw the defense out, and he’s a much more capable rebounder.

When Howard needs rim protection, Brandon will be the guy and likely a candidate for the sixth man award. He’s going to breakout and begin to prepare for his starring role next season.

Matt’s musings

The starting five and the breakout candidates could change drastically based on the eligibility of Chaundee Brown.

I still believe all three will breakout in 2020, but the extent to which they contribute will be diminished if Brown is added to the squad.
