Michigan football is still in the mix for running back Tavierre Dunlap, but will the Wolverines take two running back recruits in 2021?

When it comes to running back and Michigan football‘s 2021 recruiting class, there’s no doubt that Donovan Edwards is the priority and has been for some time.

Edwards is a unique talent and that’s why the Wolverines have been smart to make him the focus of their recruiting efforts. But another player that could be paired with Edwards in the backfield is running back Tavierre Dunlap, a recruit out of Texas.

Dunlap is 6-foot, 196 pounds and he’s a physical, straight-line runner. He averaged about 10 yards a carry last year in high school and he catches the ball better than people realize.

He’s a three-star recruit according to the 247 sports composite rankings, coming in at No. 372 overall in the 2021 class and 22nd among running backs.

247 does list him as a four-star recruit in its own rankings, putting him at No. 221 overall and 14th among running backs.

In his recent top list, Michigan football was among the finalists and according to 247 sports ($), the Wolverines are one of the top two teams in the mix along with USC.

Texas has never really been a player in this recruitment. But another team in the mix is Utah. With Michigan, it could come down to if it has room for Dunlap and that depends on some others.

Obviously, if the Wolverines strike out on Edwards, then Dunlap could be a fallback option if he still hasn’t committed anywhere.

Yet, depending on how some other things go, the Wolverines could surely find room for him. They sent Dunlap an official scholarship offer this week along with Jayden Thomas, so don’t rule it out.

Another expert projects Rocco to Notre Dame

At the start of the day, the Futurecast projections from Rivals for Rocco Spindler were already favoring the Irish, but then another analyst flipped his pick. It’s Kenny Jordan, who previously picked Spindler to land at Michigan.

It’s not EJ Holland and so it might not be the end of the world, but it’s another sign that this is trending in the wrong direction.

Maybe there will be some positive news for the Wolverines in the next day or so. It’s also possible that Spindler still picks U-M and all these people were just in the dark all along.

But there’s no question that Michigan seems on more shaky ground than just a few days ago.
