Michigan Basketball: Two 5-Star targets dropping big news this weekend
Two 5-star Michigan basketball targets making some big announcements this weekend. One will pick a college and the other narrows his suitors.
Let’s kick this off with the 2022 class. The Wolverines contacted and offered Five-Star Skyy Clark with the hopes of drawing his attention away from the university he will most likely attend. Clark is ranked 15th for his class and most guys with that much talent end up at one of the many one-and-done factories from around the country and not with Michigan basketball. In this instance, it’s Kentucky.
“That was a huge thing for me.” Skyy told Rivals Corey Evans, referring to his Kentucky offer and visit. “That is something that I have been dreaming about for a long time now since I started taking basketball seriously and it was just a great thing to see that my hard work is paying off.”
On Friday, Skyy plans on telling the college basketball world who he considers the remaining contenders for his services. There will be seven left.
In the same interview with Rivals, Clark was asked who are the schools that have been most consistent with him. Kentucky, Michigan, and six others were mentioned. While it’s very likely U-M is included in Skyy’s exclusive circle, Kentucky is the heavy favorite, and any school with have to fend off the NBA’s G League.
247 sports has four crystal balls in the Wildcats favor, and Rivals has all nine of the FutureCasts predicting the 6-foot-2 point guard to Lexington.
What else?
The Wolverines have a punchers chance at landing one of the best players from the 2021 cycle. Jalen Warley, who has a relationship to associate head coach Phil Martelli that has been covered ad nauseam, once held a FutureCast to U-M, is now believed to be headed due south to become a Seminole.
The Wolverines must acquire a ball handler for 2021 and Jalen was thought to be the guy. Eli Brooks and Mike Smith will no longer be options and the job will be left to Zeb Jackson, or someone else and there will be very little depth.
The only good news in this recruitment is a tweet from Warley that should evoke doubt in the mind of FSU fans.
"Me reading all these “analyst” predictions for where I’M committing:"
This isn’t unusual behavior for prospects. No one wants to alienate fan bases. Most of this guys want maximum viewership for this big announcement and few are going to be as big as this one.
On Sunday, at 1 PM, live on CBS Sports HQ, Warley will choose between Michigan, Virginia (who like UM once held a FutureCast), the favorite Florida State, Oregon, Miami, and Memphis.
If the Wolverines are the victors, they will have their answer at PG, if not, well, as they say, there’s plenty of fish in the sea. What they don’t say is, there are very few fish as talented as this one. Could be a big loss or a huge gain.
