Michigan Basketball: 2020 Depth chart prediction for Wolverines
Starter: Hunter Dickinson
Backups: Austin Davis, Brandon Johns Jr
When John Beilein was trying to figure out who would sit behind Teske at center, he experimented with Austin Davis, Colin Castleton, and Brandon Johns Jr. Davis and Johns weren’t up to the task and Colin was being groomed for the starring role.
A year later, the experiment was run by a different evaluator. An old school big man himself, Juwan saw Austin’s potential as a contributor and honed his low post play to the point where Davis became a necessary double-team when he was near the basket with the ball. He’s bigger than most opponents and also slower; the latter handicapping him under Beilein and the former helped him flourish under Howard.
With one more year, this time as an experienced vet and leader, Austin will see the court, but not as the starter. Unless he develops a three-point shot, this is likely his last stop for basketball. Still, in his final season, the playing time won’t be totally lopsided towards the four-star freshman HunterDickinson. It should be more like a 55/45 or 60/40 split in favor of the new guy.
Hunter is the gem of the 2020 class. Standing at 7-foot-1, Hunter finished in the top 50 for his class and is the ninth-best center.
