Will Harbaugh finally find an elite QB?

People have been very critical of Harbaugh for the play of his quarterbacks while at Michigan. I get it and some of that is legitimate.

But let’s not pretend like Harbaugh hasn’t improved things. Jake Rudock had a solid year in 2015 and Wilton Speight, before he got hurt was solid too in 2016. 2017, of course, was a debacle, but injuries didn’t help and Shea Patterson, while effective, wasn’t elite.

But outside of Denard Robinson, the previous seven years were a disaster at quarterback, so things have definitely improved. But there is no debate that Michigan hasn’t improved enough at the position, at least not enough to be Ohio State and other elite programs.

This fall, the Wolverines are getting ready for a three-horse race at quarterback but one that will likely boil down to Joe Milton or Dylan McCaffrey.

This will be Dylan’s fourth year in the program and it will be the third for Milton. Both have a year under Gattis under their belt and plenty of talent surrounding them. The receivers are good, the offensive line is good and so are the running backs.

There are no excuses. This offense should be among the best in the Big Ten and outside of Ohio State, I see no reason why any other should be better. But it comes down to the quarterback.

Patterson was good, but he was also inconsistent. He missed tons of deep balls and was far too turnover prone. If Milton or McCaffrey or some combination can improve on that, then this team will at least have a chance to get over the hump.
