Isaiah Barnes, Will Tschetter, and Kobe Bufkin are the foundation for Michigan basketball’s 2021 class. Who else will join them?

What a couple of months for Michigan Basketball.

Juwan Howard returned to his hometown and searched the talent pool for the perfect wing. What he found is Isaiah Barnes, a future student at Simeon Academy in Chicago. Barnes waited until toward the end of June to pledge, Becoming the first to join the class.

Isaiah is listed as a SF, but he can play the two. He’s a very skilled ball handler and can create his own shots by driving the lane and scoring with contact. On defense, he’s just as physical as he is on offense. A multi-year starter for the Wolverines.

Next up is Will Tschetter, the unknown from Illinois. Isaiah quickly moved up the rankings from unanimity to a high four-star, whereas Will’s rise has slowed to a halt. That will change soon.

When it comes to his scouting, no one wants buckets more than this hybrid PF, and no one wants a rebound more than him, either. Will might not get significant minutes as a freshman, but look for him to shine by year two with consistent double-double performances.

The last addition comes from a Fab Five family. When Juwan Howard was on the court dominating the paint, Kobe Bufkin’s family was watching. As Kobe said, he was a Michigan basketball fan from the womb.

And Kobe has grown up to become everything the Wolverines need. Bufkin plays for Grand Rapids Christian and on the EYBL circuit for the Family where he makes his opponents look silly. Kobe’s not scary quick, but he has well-developed fast-twitch muscles that he employs for deceptive, mind-boggling crossovers.

Who’s next for Michigan basketball?

Those three have established the class and alone would be an impressive haul. Juwan Howard wants more than impressive, however, and is going hard after three recruits that I believe could be future Wolverines.

First, there’s Jalen Warley, who has deep family ties to the Wolverines. Jalen is a five-star from Pennsylvania that’s named after Jalen Rose and his dad and Uncle played for U-M’s associate head coach Phil Martelli when he was an assistant at St. Joseph’s.

Second, A must-have for the class is a backup and eventual starter at center Efton Reid is a perfect fit. He’s from the DMV area and played with Terrance Williams and Hunter Dickinson on Team Takeover.

Reid will be the starter down at IMG Academy next season, playing on a national schedule, which will help him find out if he’s willing to wait a year to be the guy in Ann Arbor, or if he wants to be thrown into the lion’s den as a freshman.

Finally, there’s Trevor Keels, another member of Team Takeover, and another five-star. Trevor is an honor roll student and an even better student of the game. Don’t discount the Wolverines here, Juwan has experienced success in the area and on his AAU squad, and Juwan is a legend in the region for his time with the Washington Wizards/Bullets.
