Michigan Basketball: 3 Thoughts on Will Tschetter, recent 2021 recruiting
What’s next?
The obvious answer to what’s next is the commitment of Kobe Bufkin, which by all accounts, is expected to come on Friday. He released a top five this week, but every expert at 247 sports and rivals, plus others, have him going to Michigan.
If that does indeed happen, Michigan would get a third player in the 61-150 range within the past two weeks. Bufkin is ranked 78th via the 247 composite, while Barnes is 113th and Tschetter is 149th. Those rankings might seem low, but Barnes and Tschetter each qualify as fast-rising prospects and Bufkin is another who missed out on an evaulation period.
The rankings can change a lot especially during the normal spring/summer period and Bufkin, a long wing with tremendous scoring ability, looks like a top-50 guy to me. He’s ranked 61st by Rivals and I think that’s closer but he’s very good and fills another need as a scoring combo guard.
Now, Michigan needs a rim protector like Charles Bediako, who recently included U-M on his top list and a point guard like five-star Jalen Warley, who has a strong relationship with assistant Phil Martelli. Then, shoot your shot for a wing like five-star Trevor Keels or Harrison Ingram.
Last year, Howard sort of did the opposite. He chased the five-star recruits early and later got in on Dickinson and Terrance Williams. This time around, Howard invested time early in Bufkin, Tschetter and Barnes, three guys who will be multi-year contributors in the Big Ten and now, he can swing for the fences with a solid core group already in place for his 2021 class.
