Michigan Football: Breaking down J.J. McCarthy at Elite 11, 2023 OT offer
Michigan football commit J.J. McCarthy finished strong at the Elite 11 competition, plus an offer to an elite offensive tackle in 2023.
The future Michigan football quarterback, J.J. McCarthy didn’t win the Elite 11 competition, but he certainly came away with a solid performance.
While we don’t know the actual final rankings for the Elite 11, because they haven’t been released yet, Trent Dilfer did announce that Caleb Williams, who is not committed anywhere, was the winner based on his high school film. At least 75 percent. 25 percent was based on the event.
As far as McCarthy how did, there were some ups and downs, but for the most part he did well. On Wednesday, the third day of the event, he ranked sixth. Overall, we shall see, but 247 sports, which does its own rankings, placed him seventh overall. Here’s what they said:
"J.J. McCarthy was flat out solid all three days. The Illinois native, who will play his senior season at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, was consistent and precise on both Monday and Tuesday showcasing some high-level throws. Wednesday, he finished near the top of the pack. The ball doesn’t exactly pop out of McCarthy’s arms, but the future Michigan quarterback has the tools."
The one thing McCarthy did was affirm his status as one of the elite quarterbacks in the 2021 class. His performance was on par with Ohio State commit Kyle McCord and Michigan football fans have to feel good about him as the quarterback of the future.
Michigan football offers promising 2023 offensive tackle
In other notable recruiting news Wednesday, Michigan extended an offer to 2023 offensive tackle Amir Herring, a prospect out of West Bloomfield. He’s listed as 6-foot-3, 270 pounds, yet the sophomore-to-be already has a number of power-5 offers.
The Wolverines have been really successful at West Bloomfield, one of the top programs in the state of Michigan in recent years, with Cornell Wheeler and Makari Paige in the 2020 class, as well as hopefully top running back Donovan Edwards in 2021.
Herring has the look of someone that will be sought after on a national level, yet the Wolverines are doing the smart thing by getting in on him early. Michigan landed in-state offensive tackle Giovanni El-Hadi soon after McCarthy in 2021 and that helped solidify the class early.
Maybe Michigan will land another key in-state commit in early for 2023 and it looks like the push is on to make it happen with Herring.
