Michigan Football: Top CB target sets commitment date, more WR buzz
Top corner target for Michigan football Jamier Johnson sets his commitment date. Here’s a breakdown on that and more on 2021 wide receivers.
When it comes to the cornerback board for the 2021 class and Michigan football, things have been a little fluid. But one player that’s emerged as a top target for the Wolverines at the position is four-star corner Jamier Johnson, out of California.
Johnson is ranked 237th nationally according to the 247 sports composite rankings and he’s listed as the No. 17 corner and is listed at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. His recruitment has been a little bit of a mystery since he’s only visited a couple of schools on his top list, which Michigan football made.
But Yesterday, Greg Biggins of 247 sports reported that Johnson was going to commit on July 3rd, which isn’t great for the Wolverines since he hasn’t been able to visit Ann Arbor yet. Johnson has visited Oregon and USC, but in Biggins article, he says USC hasn’t shown much interest.
Michigan has still been pushing for Johnson and the Wolverines have definitely made some gains with him and even after he commits July 3rd, if it’s not to U-M, I’d still expect the staff to push for a visit.
Oregon appears to be the favorite at this point but it’s really hard to say. That’s just assuming Johnson wants to go somewhere he’s visited. However, it’s close to home and the Ducks have been after him, but so have Arizona State, Colorado and Texas.
There are no expert picks from Rivals or 247 sports right now, but there’s not much reason to feel optimistic about Michigan’s chances, unless they are able to get a visit this fall after he commits.
Latest on Christian Dixon other wide receivers
On Thursday, I wrote how four-star wide receiver Christian Dixon could be one of the next four commitments for the Wolverines in 2021 and I believe that, but he definitely wants it known his recruitment is still open. He said as much on Twitter, posting two days ago, “I AM NOT COMMITTED ANYWHERE MY RECRUITMENT IS STILL OPEN.”
Apparently, Dixon doesn’t like all the talk of him being a lock to Michigan, something that EJ Holland of Rivals ($) was able to confirm with the U-M staff. The Wolverines are still the favorite but more work may need to be done.
But Michigan also seems to be making progress with four-star wideout from Georgia, Jayden Thomas. The 6-foot-1 prospect is ranked 184th overall in 2021 and is the No. 36 wide receiver via the 247 composite rankings.
Notre Dame is probably the top rival in this one, according to Holland but Michigan’s willingness to let him play baseball, as they did with Eamonn Dennis, could be something that helps the Wolverines sway him.
