Michigan Football: Wolverines making gains out West and with 2022 QB
Michigan football has been making a strong push with some key recruits in California, as well as making an impression on a top 2022 QB.
Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan football program has been establishing a stronger presence on the West coast and in the 2021 recruiting class, that definitely appears to be working.
Michigan football hasn’t landed any commitments from California yet in 2021 but that should be changing soon as four-star wide receiver Christian Dixon has been trending with the Wolverines and continues to pick up crystal ball projections.
Dixon is a 6-foot-2 wideout who ranks 168th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings and he would be a huge get for the Wolverines and offensive coordinator Josh Gattis. He’s got good speed going down the field and excels going over the middle.
However, Dixon isn’t the only California recruit Michigan is pushing for and making gains with. Another is running back Prophet Brown, who could be an option at running back depending how things go with Donovan Edwards.
Defensively, Michigan is starting to pick up steam and one player to keep an eye on is four-star cornerback Jamier Johnson.
Despite just offering Johnson recently, 247 sports’ Greg Biggins reports that Michigan is “doing well” with Johnson ($). The Wolverines recently made his top list and are competing with Oregon, Colorado and others for his commitment.
Michigan football makes headway with 2022 QB
Having a pipeline of talented quarterbacks is essential and after landing J.J. McCarthy, a five-star quarterback in 2021, Michigan is hoping to get another elite signal caller for 2022.
On that front, quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels has been putting in work with four-star quarterback and top-50 recruit MJ Morris.

“I communicate with them once a week,” Morris told The Michigan Insider about the Wolverines ($). “I talk with Coach McDaniel. We mostly talk about building a good relationship with each other. He says if I wasn’t a fit for their offense, he wouldn’t be recruiting me.”
Previously, I broke down why Morris is exactly the kind of quarterback Michigan needs in the future, one who can beat teams with his arm or his legs. Yet, getting Morris won’t be easy with offers from Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Oregon, Nebraska, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Missouri and Auburn, among others.
But building a strong relationship early worked with McCarthy and it could work with Morris too. Speaking of McCarthy, top running back target Donovan Edwards spoke about McCarthy with the Detroit Free Press and compared him to Tom Brady.
“J.J. is like Tom Brady in my eyes,” Edwards said. “It would be dope to play with what I call Tom Brady. That’s just what I call him in my head.”
Edwards said he wouldn’t mind playing with a quarterback like that, so maybe McCarthy can help reel in Edwards, a top-50 recruit to join the 2021 class too.
