Michigan football offered a new quarterback in the class of 2022  this week and here’s a look at where things stand at that position.

Getting a quality quarterback in each recruiting class has become essential and that’s one thing Michigan football is focused on when it comes to 2022.

While the Wolverines are still working hard to lock down the 2021 class, which has 17 commitments as it stands right now, but with about 8-9 sports left, there is still lots to do.

However, at quarterback, Michigan football is all set for 2021, as five-star quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been committed for over a year. McCarthy is the 15th-ranked player overall in the 247 sports composite rankings and the No. 2 pro-style quarterback.

McCarty could prove to be Jim Harbaugh’s biggest win on the recruiting trail, along with an assist from QB coach Ben McDaniels, who is working to line up U-M’s next signal caller. To that end, Michigan football extended an offer this week to 2022 quarterback Holden Geriner.

“I have been talking with Coach McDaniels pretty regularly getting to know each other and on our call Wednesday, he offered me,” Geriner told The Michigan Insider earlier this week ($). “I was very excited for multiple reasons.”

Geriner is 6-foot-3, 210 pounds and last season, as a sophomore, he threw for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns, but did throw 12 interceptions. He’s a pro-style quarterback and doesn’t show much ability to run, yet he has some awareness in the pocket and a solid arm. He doesn’t have a cannon by any means, yet he’s accurate and has nice touch on the deep ball.

His offer sheet has also been picking up and includes offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee and West Virginia. The Savannah, Georgia prospect is obviously becoming a hot commodity in SEC country, so it will be interesting to see if Michigan can seriously enter the mix.

Other quarterback interests for Michigan football in 2022

Geriner, who is currently unranked according to 247 sports, isn’t the first offer at quarterback for Michigan in 2022. The Wolverines have been after top-100 QB Ty Simpson, however, the kid from Martin, Tennessee doesn’t seem destined to U-M and Brice Marich said as much here ($).

Simpson is an outstanding prospect, it just doesn’t seem like the Wolverines will be able to land him. Nicco Marchiol is a name Michigan fans were probably excited about at one time, especially because Marich did lodge a crystal ball pick projecting the four-star QB to Michigan back in September.

Marich lowered the confidence ($) of his pick to a two. The Wolverines are still listed as warm on Marchiol’s 247 sports profile, but they don’t seem to be in the lead. Yet, one elite prospect Michigan football does seem to have a shot with is four-star prospect MJ Morris.

Morris is another kid from Georgia and following an offer a few months back, he’s probably the top target at the position right now. 247 sports lists Morris as the second-best dual-threat QB in 2022 and the No. 41 player overall in the class. And obviously, he’d be a great fit for a number of reasons. He has no crystal ball projections at this time.

We’ll see how it pans out, but the priorities at quarterback are starting to take shape for the Wolverines and after losing out on JD Johnson from the 2021 class because he was forced to medically retire, adding high-end talent to the position will be even more important.
