Michigan Football: More positive vibes with Donovan Edwards, Wolverines
Michigan football fans are desperate for the Wolverines to land 2021 running back Donovan Edwards, one of the top players in the country.
There’s no need to beat around the bush. When it comes to the 2021 recruiting class and Michigan football, the No. 1 guy on the board is Donovan Edwards.
The do-it-all running back is ranked second at his position and No. 22 overall according to 247 sports own rankings and in the 247 sports composite rankings, he’s the No. 3 back and 37th overall. Either way, he’s elite and Michigan football would just about kill someone to sign him.
That’s how important he is and his importance is also reflected in the resources Michigan has committed to his recruitment. While Edwards obviously can’t visit Ann Arbor right now, he has visited before and he recently completed another FaceTime meeting with head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, via Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider ($).
The relationship between Edwards and the head coach is obviously very important to the West Bloomfield running back. He was close to Ryan Day when Ohio State made a real push and he seems to have a solid connection with Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma.
However, Harbaugh has laid the groundwork on this one and according to Webb ($), in the Wolverines latest visit with Edwards, which was about the offense and how he would be used, Michigan “knocked it out of the park.”
Michigan football finds perfect selling point
Joining Gattis and Harbaugh, was Jay Harbaugh. But it sounds like the OC was the key. Edwards is more than just a running back and his receiving skills are one of the biggest draws about him. Obviously, he wants that skill utilized and Gattis showed what his role would be and from what Webb has reported, it went over really well. Here’s an excerpt ($):
"“It was an impressive selling of the vision. So impressive in fact that Edwards began talking about the future would look like. And specifically what the backfield would look like.”More from GBMWolverine3 things to watch for Michigan football vs. RutgersMichigan football vs. Rutgers: Prediction, Odds, Spread and Over/Under for College Football Week 4Michigan Wolverines news: Jim Harbaugh wants J.J. Edwards also said good things about incoming freshman running back Blake Corum, who would be a future teammate of his if he committed to Michigan, so that’s another positive sign for the Wolverines. Webb quoted Edwards as saying, “I think we’d be the best duo in America.”
That’s certainly something to think about but that pairing would be hard to stop. And next season, when Edwards was a freshman, Michigan football would have Zach Charbonnet too at the very least and a trio of him, Corum and Edwards is downright scary.
As far as the experts go, on Rivals, eight of the 11 picks lodged for Edwards are leaning to Michigan, including EJ Holland’s. At 247 sports, six experts have projected Edwards to Michigan ($) and there are no predictions of him going anywhere else right now, but on the confidence scale of 1-10, the picks for Edwards range from 2-6. The average level of confidence is under five.
Meaning it’s far from a sure thing, but if you had to pick a leader, it would have to be Michigan. The Wolverines have momentum. For the millionth time, they just have to close. The thing is that Edwards doesn’t want to rush it, so they have to play it out as his pace.
