Michigan Basketball: Top 10 all-time Wolverines point guards
In his early years, John Beilein was known as a bit of a stickler. Playing fundamentally sound basketball is the only way to win games. Take an early shot, bench. Toss a three from five feet away from the three-point line, bench.
That’s the handicapped world Darius Morris lived in, and yet he made the most of it.
After a freshman season spent as the sixth man, Darius made his way into the starting lineup and onto a starting five that included Tom Hardaway, Jordan Morgan, Stu Douglass, and Zack Novak. Of those guys, Darius was the difference-maker for the 21-14 Wolverines.
Scoring 15 points, passing for 6.7 assists, and grabbing four rebounds per game, Morris led U-M past rival Michigan State twice and into the NCAA tournament. In the first round, Michigan decimated the Illini 75-45 only to meet No. 3 Duke in round two, suffering a disappointing but surprising two-point loss to the Blue Devils.
Darius sits behind only Trey Burke and Zavier Simpson for most assists in a season.
Spending only two years in college, Morris moved on to the NBA for a few seasons until landing in the G League. He is now a member of the LNB Pro A BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque in France.
