The non-conference slate

We open up our predictions with the Wolverines three non-conference games at Washington and then at home against Ball State and Arkansas State. Obviously, there are still details to be worked out for the opener Sept. 5 at Washington, but the Huskies AD has been working on all sorts of plans.

Michigan at Washington (W)

I’m weary of picking the Wolverines to beat a solid Washington (29th in ESPN FPI) team on the road in the first week of the season, but I just have a feeling this group will exercise some road demons. The Huskies are also replacing their starting quarterback and since Michigan football will have a first-time starter too, I expect a low-scoring game that the Wolverines manage to win something like 20-17.

Michigan vs Ball State (W)

After an ugly but important win at Washington, Michigan opens the season at home against Ball State. As a classic MAC opponent, this game will be a like a preseason contest for the Wolverines, who will get a chance to see extended time for Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton as the QB job could still be up for grabs at that point.

Michigan vs Arkansas State (W)

Arkansas State has put together a solid program over the years, but this season, they will open the year as the No. 87 team in ESPN’s FPI index. And while they may be able to score some points and put together a decent showing, this should be another easy tune-up win.
