Michigan Football: Quintin Somerville, Donovan Edwards get projected to UM
Michigan football has momentum on the recruiting trail right now and the Wolverines are trending with another key defensive target.
The past few days have gone about as well as could be expected for Michigan football on the recruiting trail, with three new commitments on the defensive side of the ball, all of them being four-star prospects.
It started with Junior Colson on Sunday, continued with Jaydon Hood Monday and then Kechaun Bennett added his name to Michigan’s 2021 class late Wednesday night.
Bennett is a key addition because of his raw talent and potential as a pass rusher. He had 16 sacks last season and is probably the best edge rusher in the Wolverines class right now.
But that could change. At the very least, Michigan football is looking to add another talented defensive end in four-star Quintin Somerville.
Somerville is ranked No. 152 overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings and while he did have one crystal ball projecting him to Michigan prior to this week, he’s now picked up four just today, including from Brice Marich, Sam Webb, Blair Angelo and Greg Biggins ($).
Also of note, each pick is rated at a confidence level of eight on a scale of 1-10, so there are some strong indications Somerville is coming to U-M.
Somerville is listed at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds and like Bennett, his position will likely be determined by what his body looks like. Will he add weight and be a hand-down defensive end like Kwity Paye or Aidan Hutchinson or be someone like Chase Winovich or Josh Uche, a standup edge rusher.
Only time will tell, but right now, Michigan football fans have reason to feel good.
A less certain crystal ball pick for Michigan football
On Wednesday, I took an in-depth look at Michigan’s recruitment of both Rocco Spindler and Donovan Edwards. Since then, some new things have happened that continue to make it seem as though the Wolverines have momentum.
With Spindler, Michigan released a graphic that he re-posted. It seemed like a commitment so he posted it and said specifically that it wasn’t. However, word is that still impressed him via Steve Lorenz of the Michigan Insider ($), which could improve the Wolverines chances.
As far as Edwards is concerned, the only thing that’s changed is the experts’ picks. On May 19, Tom Loy of Irish Illustrated put in a pick of Edwards to Michigan and Thursday, Allen Trieu and Steve Wiltfong each followed suit, projecting the four-star back to U-M ($).
The pick from Wiltfong is most significant. He rates his confidence level at a six, which is mostly because of the relationship between Harbaugh and Edwards, as well as Josh Gattis ($). Trieu believes things are more wide open but also reported ($) Edwards could make a decision before the season and if that means no more visits, that’s another good indication for Michigan.
