Michigan Football: 3-star 2021 NT could meet need for run stuffer
Michigan football has entered the mix for three-star nose tackle Jacob Schuster, a prospect from the Northwest who is being recruited by Shaun Nua.
Just like offensive line coach Ed Warriner, defensive line coach Shaun Nua has turned into a star on the recruiting trail and he has Michigan football in the mix for another defensive line prospect in the 2021 class.
That’s three-star defensive tackle Jacob Schuster, who just received an offer from Michigan football and Nua just a couple of days ago. The 6-foot-2 prospect who weighs 300 pounds isn’t ranked in the 247 composite rankings, however, 247 sports own rankings has him as the No. 42 tackle prospect in the 2021 class.
While he might not be really highly-touted, he’s active for a 300-pounder, notching 60 tackles last season, as well as 26 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He also has the big body Nua could develop into a legitimate nose tackle in the middle of the defensive line. Here’s what Schuster told The Michigan Insider about his offer which came down Wednesday:
"“I’ve been talking to Coach Nua, for a couple of weeks, and the other night he decided to pull the trigger. When he offered me, it was really exciting because I never would’ve thought I’d be given the chance to play at a big time school like Michigan.”"
Schuster is another three-star who could see a jump in the next batch of rankings. He also got an offer from Washington this week, which comes in addition to offers from Washington State and Boise State.
The Washington prospect is definitely raw, yet he shows plenty of potential, on both sides of the ball. Watching his highlights, you will see him play offensive tackle and that’s almost as fun as watching him play defense.
He doesn’t just block people, he destroys them. That aggressive nature and lack of technique wouldn’t work well as an offensive lineman in the Big Ten, but it shows what kind of power he has if it can be refined.
One thing Michigan football has been missing has been those 300-pound plus bodies in the middle of the defense. Chris Hinton and Mazi Smith are two promising prospects, who are expected to make big leaps this season, but the Wolverines need more big bodies in the pipeline and after missing out on some others, Shuster is a guy with impressive upside worth targeting.
