Michigan Basketball offers intriguing 3-star guard Angelo Brizzi
Michigan basketball is going to have a big recruiting class in 2021 and the Wolverines have offered a lot of guards including three-star Angel Brizzi.
With the decision of Cole Bajema to leave Michigan basketball and enter the transfer portal, the Wolverines are looking at a really, really big recruiting class in 2021.
Unless Franz Wagner decides to stay for a junior season, which is always possible depending on how next year plays out, Michigan could have as many as eight scholarships available. Hunter Dickinson, Jace Howard, Terrance Williams, Brandon Johns and Zeb Jackson are the only current scholarship guys set to be on the roster.
That would leave eight openings. You’d expect some of those to be filled by transfers, either this offseason or next, but it could lead to six or seven recruits in this class and one of those players could be three-star guard Angelo Brizzi, who reported a Michigan offer via his Twitter account.
Brizzi isn’t exactly the typical recruit that Juwan Howard has offered as head coach of the Wolverines. He’s a three-star prospect and he’s not ranked yet according to the 247 sports.
But the reality is that not every recruit in a big class is going to be a top-50 or even a top-100 player. Michigan got three top-100 players in 2020 and that was a solid class. A haul of 3-4 top-100 guys, with a couple of others sprinkled in seems realistic.
So then it’s about finding the right guys and Brizzi is an interesting fit. He’s listed as a 6-foot-3 point guard, but the left hander seems like he’s more of a combo guard to me. While his highlights show him as a point guard most of the time, he is shown playing off the ball too.
The thing that stood out the most was his ability to catch and shoot. Whether he’s a point guard or a shooting guard per say doesn’t matter as much as how he plays and Brizzi would be a good fit alongside Zeb Jackson, the one guard that will surely be on Michigan’s basketball team next year.
Brizzi can play the point, he can score out of ball screens, distribute, play up-tempo and he can shoot. He’s also been getting traction recently as he has been offered by Villanova, Colorado, and Virginia Tech in the past month or so.
Brizzi is also a pretty athletic slasher and defender. He gets to the basket and he does a solid job of finishing. He also uses his length to get into some passing lanes.
It makes sense in a lot of ways and his ability to shoot off screens and on spot ups make him a good fit for the roster, especially since Bajema, another strong 3-point shooter just departed.
