Michigan Football: Wolverines losing momentum with Jamari Buddin
It’s looking less and less like Michigan football is the strong favorite with Jamari Buddin anymore as Penn State and Michigan State are gaining.
If you follow Michigan football recruiting then you know that things have been a gotten worrisome with four-star, in-state linebacker Jamari Buddin.
At one time, not too long ago, Michigan football was seen as the clear favorite and all of the crystal ball projections from 247 sports were pointing to the Wolverines.
Despite Penn State getting some momentum, especially with three recent commitments from Michigan in-state prospects, including Jaylen Reed, who seems to have a close relationship with Buddin, those predictions hadn’t changed.
Saturday, they finally started to.

Obviously, and as we all learned with Josh Christopher in basketball, crystal balls aren’t everything. But these guys get it right most of the time, so when Allen Trieu ($) and Steve Wiltfong changed their predictions from Michigan football to foggy, it’s more reason to be concerned. The Wolverines still own 71 percent ($), but as we saw with David Davidkov, those numbers can change quickly.
While Losing Buddin would be killer, especially because it would be another talented in-state player U-M would be missing out on, Michigan has some solid candidates at linebacker including Junior Colson, who we looked at last week. The Wolverines appear to be the leader.
Michigan also made the top five for outside line Tyler McLaurin, a three-star outside linebacker out of Illinois. Michigan has done well there recently with A.J. Henning and J.J. McCarthy, but McLaurin is also being pursued by Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa State and Texas Tech.
We’ll see how things go with Buddin and the Wolverines might push harder with McLaurin if things go south with Jamari, although Colson would be a great addition either way.
The bigger issue for Michigan will be the continued perception that its not recruiting the state well. Myles Rowser just decommitted and things are also shaky with Rocco Spindler, Donovan Edwards and Garrett Dellinger.
Normally, the top-10 recruits in Michigan aren’t as talented as they are in this cycle and unless things turn around with Buddin and some of these others, it could end up as a huge missed opportunity to close the talent gap on Ohio State.
