Michigan Football: 2023 target David Vadala talks Wolverines and more
David Vadala earned a scholarship offer from Michigan football as a freshman and I caught up with him for his first media interview to discuss football and much more.
Michigan football discovered a freshman phenom from Florida before the in-state schools began calling. David Vadala might only have one offer, but it’s a big one and I interviewed him to find out how he earned such a big-time offer from Michigan, and much more.
Q: You’re a member of the 2023 class, which seems so far away, and yet you were already offered by Michigan. How were you discovered by the staff and how has your interaction been with the coaches?
A: “I was discovered by Michigan on January 28th, the day before my birthday. They came to our school and sat down with my head coach Pat Surtain and my defensive coordinator Daryl Porter, they started watching my film and they were blown away, they called the offer ‘a birthday present’. My interaction with coaches has been great.”
Q: Michigan is the only school to have offered you a scholarship so far, but I’m sure it won’t be long until others follow. With that said, you must have other schools you’re interested in. What are your top schools even if they haven’t reached out yet?
A: “Loyalty has always been a big thing to me and Michigan took the first chance on me and that is something I will remember forever. Other schools interested in me are Penn State and the University of Miami.”
Q: According to your Hudl page, you had 116 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, seven sacks, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. What do you credit your success to?
A: “I’d say that I credit my success to my hard work and drive to be better everyday, along with my great teammates and my defensive coordinator Daryl Porter who put me into a great defensive system and used me in the best way possible allowing me to really lead our defense.”
Q: You posted those stats as a freshman on the varsity squad. It was you and running back Mark Fletcher Jr., who’s one of the top running backs in the country for the 2023 class, as the only freshman on varsity for 2019. What makes you such an effective linebacker at such a young age?
A: “I think what makes me such an effective linebacker at a young age is my ability to diagnose the game, film study and constant mental reps prepare me for Friday nights. I’m in an amazing defense where I can be comfortable and play my game.”
