McCaffrey starts the season, Milton ends it as starting QB

The biggest question Michigan football must answer going into 2020 is simply, who is the starting quarterback going to be?

There are two obvious candidates, Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton, two former four-star recruits who were highly-touted and have sat multiple years waiting for an opportunity.

McCaffrey will be a redshirt junior next season, meaning it’s his fourth year with the Wolverines, while Milton will be a redshirt sophomore. Both are talented and athletic. They have each gotten some mop-up duty, but only McCaffrey has seen meaningful time on the field.

Since Dylan has been the backup the past two years and because there was no spring ball, it seems like it will be hard for Milton to supplant him before the season starts. I do believe that both will play early because they do offer different things. McCaffrey is a better runner and a more accurate passer, but Milton has a much stronger arm and a better deep ball.

When it comes to quarterbacks, Harbaugh is pretty conservative and unless Milton absolutely wows in fall camp or McCaffrey stinks up the joint, Dylan will start out in Seattle in the season opener.

However, whether it’s due to injury or inconsistency, I have a feeling at some point, Milton will get a chance to play and when he does, he will grab the job long term, eventually leading to McCaffrey transferring at the end of the season.
