Michigan football had 10 players selected in the three-day 2020 NFL draft and here are three Wolverines who found really good fits on draft weekend.
The Michigan football program didn’t have as many early-round selections as some programs, most notably Ohio State, but the Wolverines tied the Buckeyes in overall picks with 10 and for the most part, it was a good weekend.
Michigan football ended up with just one player getting picked in the first round and that was center/guard Cesar Ruiz, who will spend the next few seasons competing for Super Bowl championships and protecting Drew Brees.
It’s hard to argue against the fit there. The Saints have always valued a strong interior presence on the offensive line, dating back to the days of Jahri Evans, who was an All-Pro guard for New Orleans.
Whether Ruiz ends up being a center or guard for the Saints, he will help keep the pocket formed so Brees has the ability to step up and make clean throws from the pocket. That’s why it’s a move that makes a lot of sense.
Not only are the Saints getting a player who is really good but he also fits somewhere the Saints value and he plays a position which helps protect New Orleans’ most vital asset.
Fit is always important, but it seems to matter even more the later you get in the draft. Sometimes, a player will go somewhere and just never really get a chance. For whatever reason, things don’t work out.
And while some of the 10 Wolverines selected are going to end up not working out, here are three on top of Ruiz who landed in an ideal place on draft weekend.
