Michigan football landed its 10th commitment in the 2021 recruiting class and three-star Ja’Den McBurrows brings big upside to the Wolverines.

Some Michigan football fans aren’t going to get super excited about the Wolverines adding a commitment from three-star cornerback Ja’Den McBurrows. But that’s only if they don’t dig a little deeper.

McBurrows is ranked just as the 580th overall player according to 247 sports in the 2021 recruiting class and among corners, he’s 44th. The 5-foot-10 defensive back is also ranked as the 88th-best prospect in the state of Florida.

However, if you look at some of the offers McBurrows was getting leading up to his commitment, then you can see why Michigan football fans have reason to be excited about this one.

Just since December, McBurrows’ recruitment has been a who’s who of college football powerhouses. The Wolverines offered back on Jan. 28, yet prior to that, the three-star corner got offers from Georgia, Miami, Florida State, LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State and Maryland.

Rankings serve a very good purpose and they give perspective about where players fit in each particular class. But some kids don’t get evaluated at the same level and others develop at a different pace.

It’s hard to say why McBurrows wasn’t getting more interest before, but if you watch his highlights, you will see why Michigan football was so interested in getting him. And despite not visiting the campus, he decided to commit, joining U-M’s top-10 class.

Not only does the kid intercepts a bunch passes, he takes back a number of them for touchdowns, which is eye-popping in its own right. His stats according to his 247 sports profile gave him six interceptions and 15 pass breakups last season, which tells me that he will be a perfect fit in the Wolverines man-heavy secondary.

Some guys can play corner and some just have a knack for finding the football or being able to make a play on it and it seems like McBurrows is one of those. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him move up in the next rankings update, because teams obviously started to pursue him heavily. So forget about where he’s ranked right now and think about his potential impact.

No recruit is a sure thing, but when you beat out teams like Alabama, LSU and Ohio State for a commitment, it’s hard not to feel good about that.
