It’s never too early to look ahead to 2022 in recruiting and Michigan football is doing just that, especially with a new offer to a top 100 linebacker.

When it comes to college football recruiting, there is no such thing as starting too early and that’s something Michigan football has realized, pushing full steam ahead with the 2022 class.

As of right now, the Wolverines have plenty to work on in 2021, with just nine total commitments, although the class is ranked among the top 10 right now.

However, one area of concern for Michigan football is in-state recruits, at least as far as the 2021 class is concerned. Three top prospects just committed to Penn State last week and the Wolverines have their hands full in the recruiting battles for Rocco Spindler, Donovan Edwards and Jamari Buddin.

If you will remember back, Michigan started picking up crystal ball predictions pretty early with Edwards and Spindler and now, they are doing the same thing with in-state linebacker Joshua Burnham, who was recently offered.

Burnham is an outside linebacker and while it’s very early in the 2022 process, he’s already listed as one of the best, ranking 75th overall in the class according to 247 sports and seventh among all outside linebackers.

He’s 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds according to his scouting profile and it’s clear that Michigan is making him a priority, which is something that Burnham’s dad was very excited about as he expressed in an interview with The Michigan Insider ($).

"“Growing up a Michigan fan, it was one of the offers I was hoping to see come through and I was jumping for joy when we received the news. Josh attended the Best of the Midwest camp at Grand Valley University last year and took a liking to Coach Brown. One of his highlights from that camp was Coach Brown introducing him to Coach Harbaugh.”"

Burnham has offers from a number of other Big Ten schools already, yet the Wolverines seem to be in a solid position, which is backed up by the crystal balls put in their favor by Allen Trieu and Steve Lorenz, two recruiting experts for 247 sports.

The high school junior-to-be is an explosive athlete that registered 88 tackles last season, 12 tackles for loss and a few interceptions. He also plays running back and it’s easy to see him as potentially a Viper down the road for the Wolverines.

A top-100 defender is always a nice get and with Burnham, Michigan football is at least off to a very solid start.
