Michigan Basketball: 3 potential transfer targets for Wolverines
Wolverines should go after former Buckeye
It remains to be seen if D.J. Carton could be a realistic target for Michigan basketball or not. He left Ohio State this past season due to some mental health issues and now has no shortage of suitors in the transfer portal, including some in the Big Ten according to 247 sports.
Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota have already expressed interest along with Memphis, Marquette and Iowa State. Marquette and Iowa State are also after DeJulius, so if either gets him, the could take them out of the running for Carton.
At any rate, Carton has been pretty quiet since announcing his departure from Ohio State and since he was a Michigan target under John Beilein, there is some familiarity there, at least with Saddi Washington still on staff.
If Carton came to Michigan and was eligible right away, he’d surely make a strong case to start over Mike Smith. He averaged 10.2 points per game last season and shot 40 percent from 3-point range, while getting 2.7 free throw attempts per game. He’s athletic, he can shoot and he would fit in perfectly as a guard next to Brooks.
You could also see him playing alongside Zeb Jackson in the future. Either way, his addition would alleviate the need for a point guard in 2021, at least as a necessity and also giving Michigan basketball another veteran presence for the 2021-22 team that should also have Dickinson, Williams, Jackson, Johns and Bajema.
It will be fascinating to see which players Howard actually pursues, but each of these three players makes sense in their own way.
