Ty Simpson would be perfect QB of the future for Michigan Football
Michigan football has its star quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class in five-star J.J. McCarthy and in 2022, Ty Simpson could be the top target.
Every college program needs a stable of really good quarterbacks and that’s what Michigan football is trying to build.
We’ll find out what the Wolverines this season in Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton, who are going to be vying for the starting job this fall. But more importantly, Michigan football needs to keep recruiting quality quarterbacks, something the Wolverines have achieved in 2021 with the commitment of J.J. McCarthy.
McCarthy is a five-star recruit that is ranked No. 2 among quarterbacks in the 2021 class. But looking beyond McCarthy, to 2022, Jim Harbaugh and company have zeroed in on a new target and that’s four-star Ty Simpson.
While Simpson isn’t rated quite that highly, he’s a top-100 recruit, ranking 91st overall and according to 247 sports, he’s the No. 3 dual-threat QB in 2022.
When you watch his highlights, he actually reminds me a little bit of Shea Patterson. He throws the ball well on the run, he’s just under 6-foot-2 and he really does well throwing the ball on the move.
Simpson is from Martin, Tennessee and is the top-rated player in his home state for the 2022 class and with good reason. He does remind me of Patterson, even just the way he throws the football, except he really seems to excel with his deep-ball accuracy.
He comes from a system that seems to be essentially all shotgun, which is an obvious fit within Josh Gattis’ system with Michigan football. In that regard, Simpson would be a perfect fit. He also shows some good instincts as a runner and is tough to corral in the pocket.
Simpson has also heard from Harbaugh and the Wolverines quite frequently. Here’s what the four-star QB said to The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich ($):
"“Yes I have (stayed in contact with Michigan). I’ve been talking with Coach McDaniels and our relationship is real well. He’s really great coach with a great mind and a great personality. We talk about every two weeks.”"
One thing in Michigan’s favor is the fact that it was the first team to offer Simpson back in 2018. He has taken an unofficial visit to Ann Arbor too and he’s been a top target of Harbaugh for the past two years. Harbaugh has taken in one of his basketball games and the two even Facetime ($).
Landing Simpson will take some work as he holds offers from Alabama, LSU, Penn State, USC, Oklahoma and Tennessee. But if the Wolverines were able to get him, it would keep the pipeline well stocked after McCarthy and would give Michigan football another talented QB for the future.
