Michigan football has done well recruiting in Massachusetts over the years with Don Brown and after two commits last week, U-M is after another.

Familiarity can be a good thing in recruiting. Whether it be a familiarity with coaches, fellow recruits, schools, whatever and for Michigan football, that’s something the Wolverines are betting on with four-star offensive lineman Drew Kendall.

Kendall is one of the best offensive lineman in the 2021 recruiting class and according to the 247 sports composite rankings, he’s sixth in the country as an offensive guard and 118th overall.

The primary recruiter for Kendall, who has three crystal balls going to Boston College right now, is offensive line coach Ed Warriner, who has done a good job recruiting offensive lineman, no matter where they reside.

But in this battle, Michigan football still has some familiarity on its side and that because of recent three-star commitment, Casey Phinney.

Phinney and Kendall are high school teammates and now that Phinney, an inside linebacker, is committed to the Wolverines, he told Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider ($), he’s already doing what he can to get his teammate there as well.

"“Of course, I’m already on it (recruiting other players to U-M). Focusing on Drew for now, but there are definitely other guys.”"

Marich also caught up with Kendall ($) and asked him how Phinney’s commitment to Michigan football might change things and here’s what he said:

"“It does make me more interested in Michigan. I have a great relationship with Casey. I would say, yeah it does make me more interested. Getting to know Coach Warinner and Coach Harbaugh a little bit better during this time will be important to me.”"

Boston College is still looking like the team to beat at this point, but Michigan could be an attractive option to Kendall as the Wolverines are looking to build a solid offensive line out of this group. Greg Crippen and Giovanni El-Hadi have already committed and the Wolverines are also the crystal ball leader for highly-touted four-star Rocco Spindler.

Michigan football has a total of seven commitments right now for the 2021 class, with five coming in the last couple of weeks, starting March 25, when Crippen, who was committed to Notre Dame, pledged to the Wolverines.
