Michigan Football: Top 10 All-Time Wolverine wide receivers
Imagine playing football alongside Desmond Howard and still getting enough attention to become one of the best in the business. That speaks volumes to Derrick Alexander’s extraordinarily talents that have landed him on many lists of Michigan’s best receivers in history.
Of course, one could say it was a little easier. The safety is going shade a few yards closer to Desmond on the other side, or he wasn’t going up against the best corner on the field who would most likely be assigned to the eventual Heisman winner, but that’s not the case. Derrick’s significant contributions came after Desmond’s departure.
Derrick was the guy for UM during the 1992 and 1993 seasons when he combined for a total of 1,361 yards and 15 touchdowns while falling just short of the career 2,000-yard mark.
Alexander was scary good, and like many other great Wolverine receivers, he returned punts and kicks, maximizing his skills.
Upon graduation, Alexander was selected in the first round of the draft by the Cleveland Browns as the 29th overall pick. He didn’t play much until moving to Baltimore recording back-to-back thousand-yard years and nearly reaching that mark again in Kansas City. Derrick did record a career-high 1,391 receiving yards with the Chiefs two years before retiring.
Currently, Derrick is the wide receivers coach at Morgan State University.
