Michigan Basketball: 3 reasons Trey Burke is my favorite Wolverine
As a Michigan basketball fan for nearly three decades, there have been a lot of great players but my favorite is Trey Burke and here’s three reasons why.
There have been a lot of great Michigan basketball players over the years. Chris Webber, Glen Rice and Trey Burke are three that come to mind off the top of my head.
That’s obviously not a complete list and there are a number of others that deserve mentioning, probably including current head coach Juwan Howard, who put together a really impressive three-year run with Michigan basketball and the Fab Five.
But after Webber, Howard and the Fab Five left, Michigan wouldn’t make it back to the Final Four for 20 years. The program was nearly irrelevant on a national stage for almost a decade and as much as John Beilein did to resurrect it, there is no one that did more to put the Wolverines back on the map than Burke.
Not only was Burke a truly spectacular player, winning the James Naismith Award as a sophomore, when he averaged 18.7 points and 6.7 assists per game. He also shot 38 percent from 3-point range. Yet, Burke and many others that were around that time helped usher in this new era of Michigan basketball and while he didn’t lead the new Fab Five, it was the closet thing.
And since his game-tying shot against Kansas in the Sweet 16 came seven years ago today, it seemed like a good time to outline why Trey is still my all-time favorite Wolverine.
