Breaking down the defensive positions

Kick returner

Starters: Giles Jackson, Mike Sainristil

Backups: A.J. Henning, Ronnie Bell

Maryland learned a hard lesson: never, ever, ever sleep on Giles Jackson.

Giles was recruited by many as a running back, but he made the transition to wide receiver and exceeded expectations during his freshman year. He wrangled in nine catches for 142 yards, and he returned 24 kicks for 622 yards, averaging 25.9 yards per return.

Mike Sainristil will likely get the nod with Giles unless incoming freshman A.J. Henning can earn the trust of the coaches quickly.

Punt returner

Starter: Ronnie Bell

Backup: Mike Sainristil

Ronnie caught punts for the first four matchups and then he wasn’t seen since then outside of the receiver position. The punt returner job is likely his, if he wants it, although Mike Sainristil or A.J. Henning could make a push.

Kickoff/Field goals/Punter

StarterQuinn NordinJake Moody, Will Hart

Senior Quinn Nordin, the recruit who Jim Harbaugh wooed by sleeping over at his house, will likely be splitting time with junior Jake Moody, preparing Moody for the role in 2021 as the sole kicker.

Will Hart remains as the punter for his third – and final – season.
