Michigan Basketball: Seth Towns interest in Wolverines is intriguing
Michigan football has a loaded situation in terms of scholarships already heading into next season but high-profile transfer Seth Towns is still interested.
Just when you thought that Michigan basketball‘s roster situation couldn’t get more interesting, it was reported that a highly sought after graduate transfer, Seth Towns of Havard, is considering the Wolverines.
The news came out during the game against Maryland, which ended up as a loss for Michigan basketball, but it seems worth coming back around to. Towns is a 6-foot-7 forward and he’s a very skilled player.
There are question marks with Towns obviously, because of the injury that forced him to the 2018-19 season. He then decided he would sit out this season and he will be immediately eligible to play next season.
Towns listed Michigan as a potential landing spot according to Jon Rothstein along with Kansas, Virginia, Syracuse, Ohio State and Maryland. Certainly, it remains to be seen how hard the Wolverines push for him and how serious they are among the contenders, but it’s an intriguing possibility.
During his last season playing at Harvard, Towns shot 44 percent from beyond the arc and if Michigan basketball somehow loses Franz Wagner and Isaiah Livers to the NBA draft, Towns could be a valuable addition as a 3-pointer shooter, either as a starter or off the bench.
The problem is that Michigan basketball is already up against it in terms of scholarships. If five-star shooting guard Joshua Christopher commits as he is expected to, then the Wolverines would have to more committed scholarships than they actually have to give away.
There will certainly be some kind of attrition. Austin Davis is going to be back, at least, it appears that way. But it’s possible a guy like Adrien Nunez could go or possibly even Colin Castleton after Davis passed him on the depth chart and Hunter Dickinson is coming in next season, along with Terrance Williams, a forward that can play the three or four.
Cole Bajema is a guy that I hope sticks around and that might be able to contribute more right now, but he could leave too is he desires a more prominent role. Because of all that, Towns to Michigan doesn’t seem all that plausible, unless Livers and Wagner go pro and U-M finds itself in need of a sharpshooting win.
Then the pursuit of Towns would get very real. But for now, it feels like a long shot.
