Priority Michigan football target Donovan Edwards, a four-star running back in the 2021 class, visited Ohio State Friday and here’s the latest on this battle.

If you have been following Michigan football‘s 2021 recruiting efforts, then you know that name Donovan Edwards and you probably also know that he visited the enemy Friday, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Both Ohio State and Michigan football have been in on Edwards since the beginning of his recruitment and for a long time, the Wolverines looked like the favorite for the four-star running back out of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

According to the 247 sports composite rankings, Edwards is one of the best running backs in the country. In the composite rankings, he’s the No. 3 running back and 38th overall. In the 247 specific rankings, he’s the second-best back and No. 22 overall, which is why he would be such an important get for the Wolverines. He’s also maybe the best in-state recruit in the 2021 class.

Jim Harbaugh‘s son Jay, the running backs coach, has built a solid rapport with Edwards and that relationship, along with the fact that former teammates Cornell Wheeler and Makari Paige are Wolverines too.

But Ohio State has been trending recently. The crystal ball projections, which once heavily favored Michigan, are now 60-40 in favor of the Buckeyes and all the recent predictions have gone against the Wolverines.

The momentum has been real and it seemed to continue Friday when Edwards visited Ohio State and was able to take in spring practice. According to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider ($), Edwards was impressed with the competitiveness of Ohio State practices and also the fact that he could have a chance to play early.

Another thing that Webb said teams have been using against the Wolverines is a lack of NFL development in running backs, which is fair. Karan Higdon has maybe been Michigan football’s best running back during the Harbaugh era.

Zach Charbonnet and Hassan Haskins played well last season and at least one of them, if not both, could be two of the better backs Michigan has had in a while. But that appears to be another challenge.

The good news is that Edwards is visiting Michigan later this month and that will at least give the Wolverines a chance to regain some of the momentum lost and unless Edwards makes a decision soon, there is time to turn it around.
