Michigan Football: Wolverines are in trouble with Donovan Edwards
The 2021 class has some elite in-state recruits that are being targeted by Michigan football and one of them is Donovan Edwards, who is anything but a lock.
It’s clear that when it comes to the 2021 recruiting class, Michigan football has a chance to do some really good things especially with a number of elite prospects in the state.
One of those prospects is four-star running back Donovan Edwards, who is listed as the No. 3 running back in 2021 according to 247 sports composite rankings.
For a long time, Michigan football seemed like the favorite with Edwards, who is from West Bloomfield, Michigan and a program that just happens to be headed by a former Wolverine.
The Wolverines also added two of his teammates in 2020 in Makari Paige and Cornell Wheeler, so that has sort of given Michigan an in with Edwards, along with the fact that Ann Arbor is awfully close to where Edwards plays high school football.
Edwards has visited Michigan already and here is what he told The Michigan Insider ($) about it:
"“Me being with Makari Paige (during a recent visit to Michigan) felt like I was family. Even with Taj Mustapha and AJ Abbott being at Wisconsin and their being three years older than me, it still (felt) like family when I was up there with them. it’s just an amazing thing that Coach Bellamy has produced at West Bloomfield. He understands it’s not just for college, it’s not for him, it’s about us becoming closer and closer every single day, and being the best of friends in the future.”"
When you look at the crystal ball predictions for Edwards, you would feel good as a Michigan football fan with 62 percent of those projections going to the Wolverines. The problem is that just today, Steve Wiltfong, a respect recruiting expert put in a crystal ball for Ohio State.
Wiltfong has correctly predicted 50/51 crystal balls so far in 2021 and has a career mark about just under 90 percent, which means he is usually right. It’s so significant that he placed it for the Buckeyes today. It seems they have momentum, which should worry Michigan football.
It doesn’t mean that this battle is over. However, it’s clear that if Michigan wants to land one of the top targets on its board for 2021, it has work to do and it better do it sooner rather than later.
