Missing a dominant force

The Spartans of Michigan State were thought to be the bee’s knees for college basketball for the 2019-20 season. They’re now only the second preseason No. 1 to drop out of the polls.

MSU is barely hanging on to relevancy in the conference with three straight losses, and there isn’t a true leader that is expected to earn the honor of regular season and conference tournament title.

The Big Ten is without a dominant – final four in its future – force. Anyone can lose to anyone else on any given day.

As is stands today, Maryland leads the conference, despite having fallen to Penn State, Iowa, and mediocre Wisconsin.

How is that beneficial to U-M, and what do the Wolverines have to look forward to?

What’s to look forward to is the Big Ten conference tournament. As it has shown in the past, U-M has the ability to get seeded low – due to underperforming in conference play – and get on a roll ending with a finals appearance or better.

Michigan basketball is, depending on where you look, an eight seed in March. Should the Wolverines finish strong during the regular season and outperform expectations for the conference tournament, U-M can drop below a seven or a six seed.
