Michigan Basketball: Wolverines getting Greg Brown a real possibility
Michigan basketball beat Michigan State Saturday but also hosted some key recruits including 2020 superstar Greg Brown.
Juwan Howard has a lot of great qualities that make him a great head coach for Michigan basketball. But so far, his ability to recruit has been second to none and it’s proving true again with five-star Greg Brown.
While Howard already has a commitment from one five-star prospect out of 2020 in Isaiah Todd, there is a chance that Todd could play professionally in Europe and not play at all in college. That has kept Michigan active on the recruiting trail, pushing for other marquee guys like Joshua Christopher and Greg Brown.
Michigan basketball has made progress with Christopher and the Wolverines have also done that with Brown, that’s unquestionable. Michigan wasn’t even on the radar before Howard arrived but after working his magic, the Wolverines secured a visit, which happened to be in the form of an official visit this weekend for Michigan State ($).

And if you read what Brown’s dad, a former football player at Texas, told Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider, you come away thinking the Wolverines have a legit shot.
“Watching Juwan’s team early, man, they were smoking,” Brown Sr. said ($). “They were whooping people’s (butts) that they probably shouldn’t have been whooping. To me, that’s a testament of how well you’re being coached. To me, that’s a testament of how well you’re being coached. Plus, Juwan played and coached in the NBA for a long time. If anybody knows what it takes to get to that next level it’s him.”
Brown Sr. also added this little tidbit, which made me really think Michigan basketball has a good chance: “I want you to help prepare my son to be a pro. That’s what it’s about.”
If getting Brown to the NBA in the best possible position, then Howard and Michigan would seem to be a better fit than Texas, where Shaka Smart could still be in trouble. Kentucky is another player and Auburn is strong too, but Howard knows how to develop talent and some of his work with the Miami Heat has proven that.
That doesn’t even touch on Howard’s ability to connect with these kids, which as a former elite recruit, first-round draft pick and NBA All-Star, he can relate better than most.
In the world of college basketball recruiting, players want two things: They want to win and reach the NBA and thanks to Howard, Michigan basketball can offer both, which is why when it comes to guys like Brown, the Wolverines have a legit shot.
