Michigan Football: Wolverines offer elite 2021 corner among others
Michigan football has been busy extending offers this week and one prospect that received one is a top-five corner from 2021.
It’s a busy time on the recruiting trail for Michigan football and every other major program. After the dead period ended recently, coaches have been traveling the country and passing out offers.
One of the Wolverines newest assistant coaches, Brian Jean-Mary was on the road in Florida, recruiting for Michigan football in a state that he has obvious connections after being the defensive coordinator at South Florida.
Jean-Mary stopped in at Miami (Fla.) Palmetto via The Michigan Insider ($), a school that has a number of high-end prospects and made contact with Brashard Smith, a wideout committed to Florida, as well as Jason Marshall and Corey Collier, a pair of corners that appear to be leaning towards Miami and Florida State, respectively.
Smith is a four-star receiver ranked 330th nationally. He was also given an offer from Michigan football. Jean-Mary also offered another player on his trip to Florida according to Brice Marich ($) as another wide receiver, Troy Stellato was offered too.
Those weren’t the only recent offers from the Wolverines, who have extended a bunch in the past few days, but another that is notable, and it’s an offer to four-star Jakailin Johnson, the No. 5 corner in the 2021 class.
Of course, actually landing Johnson, who is No. 51 overall in 2021 and the top player in Missouri, out of Saint Louis, will be a difficult task. At this point, Ohio State is the competition, along with Notre Dame.
And while the Wolverines can go toe-to-toe with the Irish, they haven’t done as well against the Buckeyes in recent recruiting battles. The 6-foot corner is exactly the kind of athlete that Michigan football needs to add more of in the secondary.
It started last year with the addition of five-star Daxton Hill and in the 2020 class, Michigan was able to land two solid four-star corners in Darion Green-Warren and Andre Seldon. However, it’s been a while since they grabbed a top-100 cover corner and Jackson would be ideal.
Michigan can sell him on its ability to develop defensive backs, which is true and with someone as talented as Jackson, you could easily see him turning into an early-round pick.
But, it’s back to the Buckeyes and if the Wolverines want to start winning on the field, they have to start winning recruiting battles like this off of it.
