Michigan football is still working on a 2020 offensive lineman, while it could also check out a potential transfer at defensive tackle from Clemson.

Much of the focus when it comes to recruiting for Michigan football is looking ahead to 2021 and 2022. Yet, the Wolverines are still working on 2020 and there are still some additions possible.

While a lot has been going on recently, Michigan football did lose a 2020 commitment the other day in Micah Mazzccua, who left the Wolverines to join the Baylor Bears. The loss of the three-star offensive lineman didn’t cause alarms or anything but it was unexpected.

Something that hasn’t been unexpected is the possibility of Nick Patterson signing elsewhere and it seems like that will happen now according to The Michigan Insider ($). Like Mazzccua, he will not be signing with Michigan football.

One player that could be still though in 2020, is three-star offensive tackle James Pogorelc from Virginia. The 6-foot-7 tackle took a visit to Ann Arbor sort of late in the process, however, take a look at what he said about his visit to Steve Wiltfong of 247 sports ($):

"“I had an eye-opening official to Michigan,” Pogorelc told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong following the visit. “I loved how much time and energy the coaching staff spent to make sure I had a great experience. The highlights were getting to spend time with current players and getting to sit down and talk to Coach (Ed) Warinner and Coach (Jim) Harbaugh a lot more."

The Michigan Insider is also reporting that Ed Warriner is expected to make an in-home visit ($) with him next week in an effort to get him to sign with the Wolverines next month. He’s a three-star in the 247 composite rankings, but in the specific 247 rankings, Pohorelc ranks much higher. He’s No. 272 overall and the No. 22 tackle. The composite rankings have him No. 377.

Additionally, Steve Lorenz is also reporting ($) that the Wolverines could take an interest in Clemson graduate transfer Xavier Kelly. Kelly was recruited by Michigan football as a top-100 prospect and defensive end out of high school.

Yet, he bulked up to around 300 pounds and has played defensive tackle for the Tigers but hasn’t grown into a key player. Kelly wasn’t overly productive with 28 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 career sacks, but we all know Michigan football is in need of talent.

The Wolverines also hosted Kelly on some visits back in 2016 and with Michigan showing interest in some other defensive tackle transfers, it could be a fit. At the very least, it makes sense that U-M would explore it especially with their need for big, defensive lineman in the middle.
